The History Behind Liberty! the Drama
Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore shoals

Community Celebration
an educational & entertaining summer tradition
Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals was created in 1979 as a community-driven effort to celebrate the rich Revolutionary War history of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area.
Local leaders, historians, and artists wanted a powerful way to bring the story of the Watauga settlers and the Overmountain Men to life—on the very land where it happened. Inspired by other successful outdoor dramas across the country, they developed Liberty! as a summer tradition blending education and entertainment.
From the very beginning, it has relied heavily on:
- Local volunteers
- Regional actors and musicians
- Community support and sponsorships
What started as a historical tribute quickly grew into Tennessee’s official outdoor drama.

More than a show...
At its core, Liberty! is a community legacy project. Families participate together, generations return to the stage, and audiences come back year after year.
It’s not just a performance—it’s a living tradition that continues to honor the spirit of independence and storytelling that began on those very grounds.
